Gift Buying Guide
Birthday gifts, anniversary gifts, wedding gifts, Christmas gifts, Employee Appreciation gifts. Where does one start?
Buying a gift for a family member or friend can be overwhelming and stressful if you're not prepared. Heading to the mall or surfing online without a plan is mostly a waste of time. even worst you could end up with something completely wrong that's not even returnable.
Here are some gift buying tips for any occasion that can help you find the perfect gift:
* Ask your friends and co-workers what they gifts they like. You might uncover gift ideas you'd never have thought of on your own.
* Do some research. Does the person you're shopping for have any hobbies? A favorite type of music, book or movie? Are they trendy or conservative? What size do they wear and do they like people buying them clothes? Do they have a Wii, Playstation or Nintendo?
* Watch for sales. Nothing hurts more than knowing you've overpaid for something. Watch the Sunday newspaper for upcoming sales. Over the years, I've saved hundreds of dollars on purchases by knowing if the item was on sale just across the street.
* Look for Free Shipping promotions to stretch your gift budget. Saving money here lets you spend more on the gift.
* Check to see if an item is currently in stock and get an estimated ship date. Avoid sellers that sell items for a super low cost but tack on inflated postage and handling charges.
* Know the return policy. Check with the cashier or the store's website for their official gift return policy. Most store's list their policy at the register and even on the back of the receipt. Some stores extend their return policy for holiday gift purchases. Is there a restocking charge? Are all sales final?
* ALWAYS GET A GIFT RECEIPT. A gift receipt doesn't show the amount of the sale but it proves proof of purchase should an exchange or return be needed. If you buy a gift for $100 and need to return it without a receipt next week when it's on sale for 75% off, you just gave the store $75.
* Gift cards as a last resort. Not really the most personable of gifts, but hey, we love them just as well. Make sure buy from a reputable source and you understand the fine print. Ask about expiration dates and fees which should be clearly displayed in the store or on the back of the card. Remember most cards are treated like cash. Protect them as cash. (TIP: I ALWAYS use my gift cards IMMEDIATELY because if the merchant goes out of business, the cards become worthless)
Following these easy, simple and practical tips can make gift buying a fun, rewarding experience and can leave to more time to shop for yourself. J
